CROSS RIVER, NY -- Trey Aslanian did not mind being the demonstration partner for the wrestling clinician at the New York State Wrestling Camp at John Jay-Cross River High School. After all, the Edgemont junior was working with Troy Nickerson, New York States only five-time wrestling champion and a four-time all-America at Cornell. Nickerson will be teaching through Thursday. Former Mahopac great, 1999 state champion and two-time all-America at Cornell, Joe Mazzurco, will be running the Thursday night session.
Its pretty sick, said Aslanian, a three-time Section 1 small-school champ and 103-pound state runner-up last year. Youre only drilling with him but you are drilling with one of the all-time greats in New York. Youre also learning.
Aslanian has been attending the camp since he was a fifth-grader. He was into the camp his first year and made it a priority each summer, even though it starts on the first Monday following the end of school. Any time you can wrestle six hours a day its awesome, Aslanian said. You can see the improvements in your wrestling so much faster.
Aslanian graduated to being a counselor this year, along with many other Section 1 wrestlers. Aslanian made sure when he was talking to the younger wrestlers, he modeled the move for each of them. Its fun, Aslanian said. I love wrestling. I love teaching my little brother and I want to give back to the Edgemont youth program. I remember when I was in the youth program, Genta (Murayama) used to come back two nights a week and work with us. I want to do the same.
