Ardsley Grad Longo is Wrestling All-American

A loss in the first round of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships did not deter Springfield’s Derrick Longo from his goal.

The junior and Ardsley graduate won his next five matches to finish third in the 165-pound weight class at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and to achieve all-American status, which the top eight finishers in each weight class receive.

Teammate Joey Grippi, a Fox Lane graduate, finished seventh in the 133-pound weight class and also made all-American.

Longo said his goal going into the NCAA Championships was to make all-American. He achieved it the hard way, with a first-round loss.

Longo advanced to the placing round with a pin of Elizabethtown’s Quint Eno and capped his day with a 3-1 decision over Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Kevin O’Brien to finish third.
