ARDSLEY, N.Y. An estimated 2,000 people came to the homecoming game at Ardsley High School Saturday and enjoyed a party-like atmosphere, despite the Ardsleys Panthers loss to the Irvingtons Bulldogs 19-6.
Andrew Oberlander, who graduated at Ardsley last year and is now studying History at Iona College, was happy to be home and see his friends.
You meet a lot of alumni here, said Oberlander, a former football player in the school.
The smell of barbecue permeated the air, and a D.J. kept the crowd shaking even at the game intervals.
The blue and gold colors of the hosts were, of course, the predominant ones, on the balloons floating here and there, on the fans T-shirts and faces, and on the streams that they threw in the field.
Next to them, however, the green-and-white dressed Irvington crowd, smaller but no less supportive, became even louder in the third-quarter as the Bulldogs, having finished the first half leading 7-6, turned it to 13-6 with one more touchdown.
One of the alumni Oberlander met during the game was Chris Hofmann, also a freshman History major, but at Rhode Islands Roger Williams University.
I miss the football games, Hofmann said, even though he was disappointed with the ongoing one.
Its a bit slow, he said. But its picking up in the fourth quarter now, and its a good showing for the fans.
Hofmann said, however, that he probably wont see another game this season, for he wants to concentrate on his life at college, where he is the president of his dorm.
He also mentioned that he's playing volleyball in a sports club.
And lacrosse in a few weeks, he added. I am a busy guy.
With 5 seconds left at the end of the game, the score was still 13-6 Irvington, when Bulldogs quarterback Shoran Tamura saw a hole in the Ardsley defense and ran right through it, making it 19-6.

Ardsley
Dan Stein, quaterback: 17-24 passes for 180 yards and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Kardish, the only to score.
Kardish caught six passes for 51 yards.
