The 2016 STEM Jobs Approved Colleges survey rates universities, colleges, community colleges and trade schools on their ability and responsiveness to programs connecting students with high- demand, high-growth STEM occupations.
“The Step up to STEM program at Mercy provides students the academic and social support needed to graduate with a STEM degree and the skills they will need to be competitive in the job market," said Carolina Hernandez, Mercy College’s Title V Grant Coordinator. "Our annual Summer Enrichment Program gives students hands-on research experience that is essential in STEM fields. As a result, students in our program graduate understanding the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to STEM."
Colleges were scored on publicly available data and responses to proprietary questions around key indicators including availability of STEM classes, career development and engagement of under-represented student populations.
In recognition, Mercy College will be featured in STEM Jobs magazine and online as part of the entire 2016 list of STEM Jobs Approved Colleges.
This announcement comes at the heels of Mercy College receiving a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program. The grant, for just over $1.1 million, is for a project to advance mathematics education, with a particular emphasis on veterans retraining for new careers as secondary mathematics teachers.
Mercy College will recruit 10 veterans who have strong math backgrounds to qualify for full scholarships in a 14-month master’s degree program, with the intention of assisting 20 veterans over the period of the grant to complete their coursework and support their introduction into teaching. Mercy will collaborate with the Yonkers Public School District to train the program’s students.
