The AHHS Board, comprised of President Shanelle Gonzales, Vice President Aram Peers, Treasurer Robin Jessamy, Secretary Mikayla Brown and Public Relations Officer Angelene Dimaano, recently joined the Elmsford Board of Education and Village Board in launching Anti-Bullying Month, a priority cause for the student leaders.
"We have been very fortunate to have an administrative staff that is understanding, helpful and accessible," Dimaano said. "We are in constant contact with Superintendent Dr. (Joseph) Ricca and Principal Mr. (Marc) Biacco in order to expedite student activities. We are currently working with the administration on the anti-bullying campaign in order to protect and enhance the students' learning environment."
Ricca, who is in his first year as superintendent, said he has worked with the student government on planning a Veterans Day event, the anti-bullying campaign and other projects.
"We have a very proactive group of student leaders who are very involved in many aspects of the school life," Ricca said. "I've learned a lot about the community being around them. Right now, they are working to have a joint homecoming dance with Briarcliff High School. Our football teams are combined this year and the students wanted to work with Briarcliff's student leaders. The students are learning about building coalitions and partnering."
As a leadership arm of the school, the student government is focused on helping their peers in grades 7-12 achieve achieve academic success while enjoying the school's social and community life, highlighted by Spirit Week from Oct. 15-18.
"Our main goals include promoting school spirit, supporting the student body's needs, raising awareness, and trying to make this the most memorable year yet," Dimaano said. "We are very excited for our upcoming Spirit Week. We coordinated our pep rally and Homecoming, which is on Friday, Oct 18, with our new conjoint football team (with Briarcliff High school). "We will be continuing our annual activities such as Rec Night, the video game tournaments, and the Iron Man physical competitions. We typically run a concession stand at all of our events to raise money."
