On Feb. 20, an Edgemont woman reported that $10 in cash and a GPS device were stolen from her car, which was unlocked in her driveway, police said.
On Feb. 21, another Edgemont woman told police that $30 in quarters was taken from her vehicle, which was also unlocked in her driveway.
Then on Sunday, Feb. 24, an Edgemont man reported that he returned from vacation to find that $20 had been taken from both of his cars, which had been left unlocked in his driveway.
The thefts probably could have been prevented had the cars been locked, DeCarlo said. Greenburgh residents should make sure to lock their car doors and roll up the windows, he said, adding that they also should not leave valuables in plain view in a car.
"Criminals love to go window shopping," DeCarlo wrote in a statement. "They walk down neighborhood streets or go through shopping center parking lots looking through the windows of parked cars to see what people left behind."
Drivers should not leave personal identification documents, like licenses and credit cards, in their vehicles, DeCarlo added. They also should try to park in a well-lit area or under a motion detector light, he said.
