TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The man who dangled himself off the Tappan Zee Bridge to protest Rockland County government officials said Tuesday he wasn't worried about the charges filed against him in Greenburgh Town Court.
I understand I must pay somewhat for what I did, Michael Davitt, 54, said. I just want people to understand what drove me to do what I did.
Davitt's comments came after he appeared in court on several violations and misdemeanors, including reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and resisting arrest. Davitt's case has been adjourned to Feb. 28.
Davitt attached himself to a harness, jumped off the Tappan Zee Bridge and dangled mid-air for about three hours in November to protest what he calls the denial of my rights.
Davitt worked for Rockland County for 19 years until he was told he was mentally unfit to do his job as a substance abuse counselor.
Davitt has filed a lawsuit against the county, saying he had complained of being harassed at work. When he complained, the county did the exact opposite of what was supposed to be done, Davitt said.
The more I complained, the less they actually did to mitigate or understand what happened, he said.
Davitt said his next move would be to further publicize his issues with Rockland County officials.
Because they're not willing to settle, I have to go viral with all this stuff, he said.
