HARTSDALE, N.Y. -- The Verizon strike is over, at least for now. The 45,000 members of the unions Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, who had been on a two-week strike in nine states from Rhode Island to Virginia, will return to work on Monday night.
Both the unions and Verizon attributed the end of the strike to recent progress in the negotiations.
The strike is over for now. The company agreed to bargain fairly, said Joseph Mayhew, director of communications at CWA Local 1103, the branch of the Communications Workers of America that oversees the Westchester County.
Among the most significant changes in the negotiations, Mayhew mentioned the consolidation of regional bargaining tables into one and the creation of a new committee to deal only with financial issues.
Verizons spokesman John Bonomo confirmed the headway in local issues, and said that the end of the strike will help the negotiations of the most complex ones, such as pensions, healthcare and job security.
I think both sides are much more focused now on discussing a new bargaining agreement, Bonomo said.
