Shoppers Spend Black Friday Searching For Deals

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Like many other Black Friday shoppers, Mount Vernon's Maxine Rourse and Wanda Alston had tired out around 3 p.m.

“I started at about 9:30-10 a.m. this morning, and now I”m getting ready to leave,” Alston said while standing outside the GameStop store with five or six shopping bags at her feet. She later added, “I'm ready to go; my feet hurt.”

Thousands from Westchester County came out to shop on Friday for the traditional post-Thanksgiving sales. Some stayed up late for midnight store openings while others started after a good night's sleep.

The K-Mart in Greenburgh was still busy when Rourse and Alston had left, although there were more people coming out of the store than going in. Customers were sparse at the other stores in the shopping center.

Rourse and Alston had been Christmas shopping at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Greenburgh and Toys 'R Us in White Plains. Rourse said they came out to shop on Black Friday for the tradition and the deals.

“It's been pretty good,” Rourse said, nothing that they didn't see anything too unusual or exciting.

Alston said it wasn't too bad, but the lines were too long and the stores were too hot. She laughed when asked what she would do after getting home.

“Go lay down. Have a drink or two and go lay down,” she said.
