GREENBURGH, N.Y. On the eve of the biggest lottery jackpot in history, people across the country are buying into the Mega Millions madness.
In Greenburgh, ticket holders hoping to beat the odds are already dreaming of what they would do if they cashed in on the $540 million pot.
As it turns out, the millionaire hopefuls are a generous group.
I would give most of it away to my kids and grandkids, Denise Knight said walking out of Central Park Avenues Dairydel. Im getting older. I dont need that much money anymore.
Janelle Rivera agreed.
Maybe I would buy a new house, she said. But I would give most of it to my daughter and grandson.
According to Forbes, the odds of hitting the jackpot are a slim 175.7 million to one. But that hasnt stopped people from snatching up the tickets.
In California, there have been reports of ticket-buyers standing in line as long as four hours for a chance to grab a row of numbers.
While Greenburgh hopefuls wont have to wait that long, they are turning out in big numbers, store owners said.
Many, like Knight, are infrequent lottery players enticed by the growing pot.
When it gets so big its hard not to play, she said.
Dairydel, who sold a winning $70 million Powerball ticket just last month, has been even busier than usual, according to clerks. Across the road, Greenland Deli workers said they too have seen a constant stream of hopefuls coming through their doors.
People are excited, Alex Moham said. They want to play and they want to win.
The winner may have even more to be excited about as the jackpot could increase as more tickets are sold before Fridays 11 p.m. drawing.
