Teacher Valerie Barbaro of Hartsdales Woodlands High School was recently awarded the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award for her dedication to teaching.
A 23-year veteran of the Greenburgh Central 7 district, Barbaro was honored for her excellence teaching reading and social studies to children in elementary school through high school.
I love teaching and I love kids, said Barbaro. And I love trying to pass knowledge on to the future generations because they will carry it on when Im long gone. So you want to well-prepare them for the world.
When Barbaro was nominated by a former student who is now in college, not only was she shocked to be considered for the award, but she was touched that the student chose her.
She thought enough of me to nominate me, said Barbaro. When I won, I was very humbled by it. For her to even remember me is one of the nicest gifts. Its a very rewarding thing that I can change a persons life.
Barbaro has stayed in the Greenburgh school district because she said the populations diversity allows her help the students in different ways.
Im a very old-time school teacher, said Barbaro. Tough love. Im the mother, the teacher, the nurturer. What they need, they get in me.
The Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction was awarded by the National Society of High School Scholars.
