To the Editor:
Last year the Greenburgh Human Rights Committee reached out to former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino asking for help --trying to get a bus stop and bus routes at Rivertowns Square. The shopping center, which will soon consist of a hotel, supermarket, movie theater, restaurant and shops, is located a few blocks away from the closest bus stop - on Saw Mill River Road. There is no shelter at that bus stop- discouraging use during the cold winter months. And, employees of Rivertowns Square who don't have cars have to cross the dangerous Saw Mill River Parkway by foot to get to the shopping center. A few years ago a pedestrian lost his life when a car hit the pedestrian crossing the parkway.
I am very pleased that the administration of County Executive George Latimer is taking this safety problem seriously--and has directed the County Department of Public Works & Transportation to work with Liberty Bus Company regarding this request.
If the County Executive is able to get a bus stop at the busy shopping center and bus routes -our new County Executive will have achieved something that the previous administration was unable to accomplish --improve pedestrian safety for visitors of a major new shopping center. I hope that County Executive Latimer will give this the highest priority attention.
