GREENBURGH, N.Y. Starting next week, Greenburgh will be replacing street lights along six roadways with new energy efficient LED light fixtures.
The pilot project, which Greenburgh is conducting in cooperation with the New York Power Authority, kicks off March 13 and will take place on Manhattan Avenue, Dobbs Ferry Road (from Route 9A to Park Avenue), Columbia Avenue, Joyce Road, South Road and Whittington Road.
The locations were selected to evaluate the performance and cost effectiveness of the LED fixtures and determine if they should be widespread throughout the town. LED technology has been used for many traffic signals since 2003 and is now considered more appropriate for street lights.
Supervisor Paul Feiner said the project is being funded entirely through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Greenburgh was awarded $156,000 from the program to install and evaluate the roadway lighting.
The program is designed to help municipalities reduce fossil fuel emissions and energy use, improve energy efficiency and create and retain jobs.
