Greenburgh Police Hunt For Rock-Throwing Vandals

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Police are hunting for the rock-wielding vandals who smashed the windows of two town front loaders last week.

Town workers found the shattered remains of the windows of the two pieces of excavation equipment at the Taxter Street transfer station early on March 16.

Greenburgh police say vandals hurled rocks at the windows of the front loaders between Thursday evening and early Friday.

Town officials this week criticized the destruction.

“It’s created a real headache,” said Public Works Deputy Commissioner Richard Fon.

Both pieces of heavy equipment were stored at the station on town property, about 500 yards behind a locked gate. They were the only two pieces of equipment stored on the property.

While the locked metal gate prevents vehicles from entering the site, it wasn’t large enough to stop the vandals on foot, Fon said.

“Kids must have got up there, pelted the windows with rocks,” he said.

Both front loaders are in the shop, and town officials said they are waiting to hear just how much the work will cost.

“It’s not going to be cheap. These are heavy-end machines,” Fon said.
