GREENBURGH, N.Y. Residents in Greenburgh may notice discolored water and a change in pressure next week, town officials have warned.
The towns water department will flush fire hydrants during its spring maintenance program, beginning Monday and lasting through April 4.
The flushing is necessary to make sure the fire hydrants are in good working order in case of emergencies and to help flush sediment out of the distribution system, officials said.
The hydrant flushing and operating action will take place during the day from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Officials warn residents in the Greenburgh Water District should expect temporary periods of discolored water and lowered pressure resulting from this maintenance operation.
The discoloration is harmless, they said, and consists of harmless silt and air and does not affect the safety of the water. However, residents are advised to keep water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking.
The town is also advising customers to make sure the water is clear before washing clothes to avoid staining.
To clear the pipes of discolored water, run cold-water faucets for a few minutes.
