GREENBURGH - The Greenburgh Central 7 school district will hold its budget revote Tuesday, hoping for a better result than last month.
In May, the $57.44 million budget was defeated by five votes. The same budget is being proposed for a second time -- it shows a 5.8 percent tax rate increase from last year's budget. The school district officials say the tax increase is necessary in order to ensure that the district's programs and services will remain in good standing.
If the proposed budget is voted down a second time, the district will go to a contingency plan. The contingency budget is slated at $57.338 million with a 5.8 percent tax rate increase. According to the district, this budget will force the Greenburgh schools to suspend impending programs and not buy any new school equipment or hire new staff members. In addition, non-customary school bus transportation will be cut, library renovations will be cancelled, as will the installation of a more efficient telephone system.
Superintendent Ronald Smalls said that he is optimistic that the budget will pass, and hopes for a larger voter turnout this time around, especially since the forecast predicts sunshine.
