GREENBURGH, N.Y. - While Halloween is the night of costumes and candy, town officials have advised residents to stay indoors and not go trick-or-treating. Even though the snow has stopped falling, the conditions outside might not be safe.
"I know children like to go out and I hate to be the Scrooge of Halloween, but it's a unique night," said Greenburgh Police Chief Joseph DeCarlo, referring to Saturday's snow storm.
Parents and children who decide to venture outdoors should be extremely cautious of hanging branches that could snap and electrical wires that were torn down during the storm and could still be live. A night out trick-or-treating this year could result in an injury.
"We still have wires down and you can never be sure if they're live or not," said DeCarlo. "We're trying to look at each one to see if they're live, but you're never sure."
To err on the side of caution, residents are asked to skip trick-or-treating and enjoy time at home.
