Firefighters Battle Greenburgh Blaze

GRENBURGH, N.Y. – Firefighters have managed to get a basement fire under control after it tore through a Lark Avenue home early Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters from four departments responded to the blaze at 8 Lark Ave. around 1:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Eduardo Bejar, 45, who lives in the home with his elderly mother, Raquel, and two siblings, Mercedes and Jose, said his sister was home alone when the fire broke out.

Mercedes was in the kitchen, Bejar said, when she noticed flames coming from the basement. She was able to escape before running to a neighbor, who called 911.

Firefighters were unable to get inside the house after the fire spread to the first floor of the two-story home. Using a chainsaw to open the right side of the house, crews fought the blaze from the side lawn.

Standing in the street as smoke billowed from the windows, Eduardo Bejar said he had no idea how bad the damage would be.

“It’s not a good feeling,” Bejar said.

In the driveway, a neighbor attempted to console Mercedes, who was too emotional to speak.

Neither the family nor firefighters were sure what started the blaze. But Bejar was left wondering what he or his family could have done to prevent the flames.

“You don’t know when it’s going to happen,” Bejar said. “Maybe it was a mistake that we needed to fix. I don’t know.”
