GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Seven members of the Elmsford Fire Department will be receiving Lifesaving Awards in May for their efforts in aiding two men who last year suffered heart attacks.
Lieutenant/EMT Scott Jones, Firefighter/EMT Stuart Barksdale, Firefighter Alex Povella, Firefighter Jamie Cruz, EMS Lieutenant Alex Camacho, Firefighter Chris Broder and Firefighter Virgil Kistler were all recently notified that they will be recognized at the 39th Annual Westchester Regional EMS Council Awards Ceremony May 24 at Sleepy Hollow High School.
On June 6, 2011, Jones, Barksdale, Povella and Cruz responded to the Eldorado Diner on West Main St. at 6:14 a.m. on a report of a man not breathing. Upon arrival, they found Elmsford Police Officer Johnny Belardo and Greenburgh Police Officer Dave Wagman administering CPR on the patient, who was in full cardiac arrest.
Jones used an Automated External Defibrillator to administer one shock to the patient before Greenburgh Police medics Meghan Schnibbe and Giovanni Formaro arrived and administered two more shocks. The patient was revived and then transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
On November 4, 2011, Camacho, Broder and Kistler responded to a report of a man who had suffered injuries from a fall at 3:25 p.m. at 325 East Main St. Upon arrival they found him in full cardiac arrest.
The members immediately initiated CPR, while using an Automated External Defibrillator to administer one shock to the patient. Greenburgh Police Medic Gustavo Torres then arrived, administered more shocks and began ALS protocols.
The patient was transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment. While en route the patient regained a pulse and began breathing on his own. He was released from the hospital about three weeks later.
The firefighters were all nominated for the awards by Deputy Chief Sydney Henry, Jr.
