EDGEMONT, N.Y. -- The daughters of Ellen Brody, the driver who collided with a Metro-North train on Feb. 3 -- killing six people including herself -- defended their mother Tuesday on NBC's Today Show.

"I know who my mom was. I know she would never, never intentionally hurt people,'' Alexa Brody told NBC's Matt Lauer during the television interview in their Edgemont home.

Lauer asked the three daughters what they thought of the sometimes cruel, judgmental comments on social media.

Julia, the middle child in college, said she tries not to read them, saying her mother "is not a murderer. It's just not true."

"A lot of people want to find a reason. It was an accident," Danielle added.

"I tried to avoid the news because I don't want the details,'' said Alexa, a student at Edgemont High School. "Obviously the way it happened is so upsetting."

"I don't know if knowing or not knowing would make it better,'' Danielle, the oldest, said. "It's so unimaginable and it feels so unreal."

The sisters recalled how they heard the news. Their father, Alan, arrived home after searching for his wife. Two police cars followed his car into the driveway.

"When he came in he said, 'She's gone.'"

"That night, we all slept together,'' Julia said.
