Construction Begins On Memorial Park For Veterans In Greenburgh

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Construction on a new Veterans Memorial Park is set to start in Greenburgh, according to Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey signs a poster last fall at the site of Greenburgh's new Veterans Park, now being built in Hartsdale. Supervisor Paul Feiner hold the sign steady as U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand looks on.

The park will be at DeSanti Plaza, across from the train station in the hamlet of Hartsdale, Feiner said Wednesday.

It is expected to be completed in time for the town’s Veterans Day ceremonies in November.

Feiner said the town believes that the park “will be a beautiful asset to Hartsdale” and will give veterans and their families “a chance to reflect on the contributions local heroes have made.”

Placing the park near the train station will also give visitors “a great first impression of our community,” Feiner said.

And since it could be a “destination point” for some, the park should also give local businesses a boost, he added.

Feiner said the park will be closed during the construction period and adjacent parking spaces will be off limits. However, he added, traffic will not be affected by the project.

The town's annual veterans barbecue will be held starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Anthony F. Veteran Park, 11 Olympic Lane, Hartsdale.

In November, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.,) and Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) unveiled a sign announcing the project and later signed a poster with the photos and names of 150 veterans who had taken part in the town’s “Living History Initiative.”

Each veteran was interviewed on public access television and those interviews are broadcast every Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

A month later, town officials appointed an eight-member Veterans Advisory Board, Feiner said.

According to the supervisor, the committee’s goal is to identify resources such as benefits, education and networking for local veterans.

It also organizes annual Veterans Day ceremonies and is responsible for ensuring that the veterans’ interviews appear on public access television, he said.
