Con Edison To Greenburgh, Elmsford: Conserve Electricity

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. — Residents in the Ardsley, Elmsford, Greenburgh, Irvington and Tarrytown areas have had full power restored around noon Friday by Con Edison, according to the company.

The electric company had reduced voltage to the area by five percent to fix problems on electrical cables. Con Ed spokesperson Allan Drury said the reduced voltage was a way to “prevent a larger problem.”

Approximately 29,000 customers live in the affected area, he said.

While the problem was being repaired, Con Ed asked residents to turn off major appliances such as washers, dryers and air conditioning. 

Con Ed normally reduces voltage a number of times during the summer months, Drury said, because the cables get hot and reducing voltage. There’s also a lot of demand—Drury noted that it looked like the company may pass the all-time high in wattage usage today. The record is 13, 141 watts. As of 9 a.m., Drury said the company had a reading of 11,635 watts already.
