Broad Street was shut down between Fleetwood Avenue and Gramatan Avenue in Mount Vernon on Thursday afternoon, May 23 after an ambulate driver drove into it and got stuck. The hole developed just outside the 42 Broad Street development.
Broad Street is expected to open at approximately noon on Friday, May 24, though it was unclear when construction will resume at the site as it is evaluated.
According to DPW officials, the street has stress cracks throughout the roadway and the area where the ambulate crashed was “not properly bladed” or secured by the contractor who is working on the building. It is believed that recent rains may have attributed to the degradation of the roadway.
DPW workers plan to fill in the hole, cut out a stretch of the street and “pave it the right way.”
A corporate counsel for the city noted that the blade didn’t move, the street collapsed under it, and the van had to be removed by a large forklift.
