Hartsdale Woman, 84, Keeps Up The NYC Commute

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – There are, according to government statistics, millions of people in the country trying to find a job. But for one 84-year-old woman, the problem is just the opposite.

"I'd like to retire, but he won't let me go until he's ready," a laughing Irene Angelidakis said Sunday while watching her great granddaughters in the Scarsdale Halloween parade.

"He" is Joseph M. Cohen of J.M. Cohen & Co. on West 55th Street in Manhattan. Twice a week, Angelidakis, whose daughter lives in Scarsdale, commutes from her Hartsdale home into the city to do secretarial and personal assistant chores for the former Wall Street brokerage firm owner. The business moved uptown 13 years ago, she said, and Cohen handles investments.

"Being on Wall Street was an exciting life for me," Angelidakis said. "Working for him was wonderful. He treats people fairly. There are not many like that."

She said she likes keeping busy, but, at 84, after two hip replacements and a quadruple bypass, the two-day week suits her fine.

"When I work, I work a week in two days – or in one day," she said.
