Greenburgh Puts Its Taste Buds to the Test

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Greenburgh put its taste buds to the test Saturday, hoping to get a sample of the best food the town has to offer.

Hundreds of students, parents and community members crowded into Woodlands High School in Hartsdale for the second annual Taste Off event.

There, vendors from around the town lined their tables along the walls in both of the school’s gymnasiums, as they put their reputations on the line and served up their best dishes.

“It’s a win-win,” said David Jackson, president of the Woodlands Falcons Nest Booster Club. “People get to try all sorts of food and the businesses all like the fact that people get to see them.”

It was second year that Jackson and the Booster Club, along with the Woodlands Middle and High School PTSAs, hosted the event. With more than 25 vendors, all with Greenburgh connections, serving everything from cupcakes to burgers to pasta, visitors said it was well worth the price of admission.

“This is amazing,” Stephanie Melowsky said, staring at a plate of pasta from Cerbone of Naples. “And this event is great. I think all the schools should do it.”

Cynthia Walker said she never realized how many restaurants were in the town.

“I think it’s fabulous,” she said. “I like the idea you get to sample everything and get an idea of what each one offers.”

As for the best dish, Walker said it was a tough call. Stash Baked Catering took the prize for best cupcakes, she said. But Trader Joe’s had a great cookie-butter spread, and Café Azzuri featured top-of-the-line dishes too, she said.

“I didn’t realize how much Greenburgh has to offer,” she said.

Jackson said organizers were expecting more than twice as many visitors as last year, when they raised $3,500. The money raised Saturday during the Taste Off as well as a silent auction will go to the PTSAs’ budgets and the Booster Club’s athletic awards ceremony later this year.
