Army Veteran Leaves Region To Join Ukraine's Fight Against Russia A US Army veteran has left his family in Connecticut behind to help fight the Russian forces invading Ukraine. Fairfield County resident James Vasquez, age 47, of Norwalk, is on the front lines and is telling a harrowing story via Twitter of the resolve and grit of the Ukrainian soldiers and people. In a post from just 20 hours ago, Vasquez tweeted: "Just went through six straight hours of combat. I have crazy video I’ll post later. 2 men were shot but will be ok. Popular Teacher In Area Dies Suddenly At Age 48 A popular Northern Westchester teacher died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 22. Danielle Marie Coletta of Peekskill was 48 years old. She was a sixth-grade teacher at Mildred E. Strang Middle School in Yorktown. Her career began at Columbus Elementary School in Hawthorne, teaching second grade, followed by many years at Brookside Elementary School in Yorktown, as a third-grade teacher.  She attended George Washington Elementary School in Mohegan Lake, Copper Beech Middle School, and Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt Manor.  She graduated from Pace University in Pleasantville, …

Simonne Quigley, 99, Red Cross Translator In World War II, Local Community Organizer, Activist Simonne (Lanowitz) Quigley, 99, of Newton, Massachusetts, formerly of Peekskill, passed away peacefully on January 18 at her home in Newton. Born October 25, 1920 and raised in Paris, France, Simonne worked as a translator for the American Red Cross during World War II. Following the end of the war, she immigrated to the United States, settled and worked in New York City, marrying her husband of 46 years, Robert Nolan Quigley in 1948. While raising eight children and several foster children, Simonne was the Westchester co-coordinator for the Christian Family Movement’s foreign student progr…

College-Bound Student From Area Awarded Fasny Scholarship A Mahopac student who has graduated from high school and will soon be heading off to college has been awarded with a scholarship from the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). Emma Goodrow accepted the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship at Mahopac High School’s Senior Awards Night. Donald J.
