'She Was Always Kind': 19-Year-Old College Student From Region Dies After Cancer Battle Friends and family are mourning the loss of a beloved college student from the region following her death from cancer. Saratoga County resident Sophia John, of Ballston Spa, died Monday, Dec. 18, at the age 19 after a short battle with leukemia, according to her obituary. John graduated from Shenendehowa High School in 2022 and was a sophomore at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where she was majoring in corporate finance and accounting. 'Significant' Cancer Levels Discovered In NY School District, Report Says A study has found that people living near or who attend school in a New York school district had "significant" higher cancer incidents. The study found the number of residents of all ages living within the Northport-East Northport School District had a "statistically significant," higher rate of cancer, reported ABC 7 Eyewitness News. The types of cancer found in excess included pancreatic cancer, malignant melanoma of the skin, uterine (corpus) cancer, and prostate cancer," the study said. Deodorants Recalled Due To Unexpected Levels Of Cancer-Causing Chemical A company has recalled some of its deodorant products due to unexpected levels of a carcinogen.  TCP HOT Acquisition LLC dba HRB Brands recalled "Sure" and "Brut" branded aerosol spray deodorants with expiration dates on or before August 2023, according to an announcement on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Blood Drives To Be Held In NY In Effort To Save 4-Year-Old Boy With Leukemia A number of blood drives are being held in the area this month in the hope of saving a Long Island 4-year-old with leukemia.  Nassau County resident Ayden Paredes, of Glen Cove, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on Feb. 7 of 2021, according to Mark Paredes, Ayden's father.  Ayden has been receiving chemotherapy treatments and blood transfusions since then, but doctors are now saying he needs a blood stem cell/bone marrow transplant to save his life, Mark said.
