Brianna’s Law was signed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week, which will phase in requirements that all operators of watercraft must complete a state-approved boating safety course. Dutchess County Sheriff To Conduct Boating Safety Courses Marine Patrol Deputies throughout the county will be conducting a series of boating safety courses over the next several months, Dutchess County Sheriff Adrian “Butch” Anderson announced in a press release. These safety courses are intended to provide boaters with the knowledge and safety skills they need to operate their vessels properly and responsibly. Those born on or after May 1, 1996 must complete an approved course to operate a mechanically-propelled boat, as per required by law. Lightning Strike Hospitalizes Three At Lake Mahopac A lightning strike on Lake Mahopac sent three people out boating to the hospital and slightly injured another. The incident took place around 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 4 when Putnam County Sheriff's Sgt. Matthew Monroe of the department's Marine Patrol Unit responded to a report of an occupied disabled boat on Lake Mahopac, the department said. During heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes Monroe was able to locate the disabled vessel, near the northwest corner of the lake. Voluntary Boat Inspections Set For These Putnam County Sites Be ready for the summer and fun on the water by having a vessel inspection performed by police officers and deputy sheriffs assigned to the Marine Unit on Lake Mahopac. The inspections will also be done by Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies in Putnam Valley and Cold Spring. In an attempt to educate the community on safe boating, officers will advise boaters of required safety equipment and boating regulations in New York State.
