School that back-pedaled on bike boy’s flag gave us a true patriot

EDITORIAL: A California school pulled a U-turn after forcing a student to yank the Stars and Stripes from behind his bike, claiming that Old Glory could start, of all things, a race riot. But it’s too late. If you’re offended by coarse language, please click past, ’cause all I can think of when I see something like this is that infamous line, delivered as only Joe Pesci could, in “Raging Bull”:

Where do you get your balls…?

How did we end up in a society where the pre-pubes are smarter than the adults entrusted with safeguarding them and ensuring they get a fair and decent education?

How many more mental midgets (sorry, I mean intellectually-challenged people of below-average height) are our kids going to have to suffer as role models before we create a massive coalition of What’s Right?

I wish these morons had stuck to their guns, just so a judge could sentence them to having flagpoles stuck up their respective asses.

When does it all end? When does this oversensitivity to anything and everything stop? This Ozzie and Harriet society that some people want to re-create overlooks some very significant facts — beginning with a 1950s America blighted by blacks’ inability to vote and the subjugation of women. For starters.

I am by no means a fan of today’s media, but BIG UPS to Fox 40 out in California. Those guys got hold of the story, put it out there, and watched it spread like …. well, to be completely honest: a California wildfire.

Citizens from throughout the U.S. deluged the school with calls. A woman from Texas vowed to send 1 million flags in protest. And just like that, school officials back-pedaled. Now, they say, they’ll be taking a look at the “instigators” who complained.

So instead of admitting a mistake and taking responsibility — thereby setting a fine example for the kids — they’ve already found themselves some scapegoats. I’d like to send them 1 million jellydonuts — for being such spineless jellyfish.

Of course, no Great American Tale like this would be complete without a capitalizer. And sure enough, a politician who doesn’t know 13-year-old Cody Alicea from a Jonas brother has offered to fly the little pedaler to Washington, D.C., where, I would hope, he at least be given a shiny new set of wheels. Shoot, I’d give him his own chaffeur if I could.

Y’know what the absolute killer of this story is? Cody had been flying the Stars and Stripes for TWO MONTHS, but a school supervisor chose this, of all weeks, to pop him.

The eighth-grader was saluting people like his grandfather, who fought in combat for the freedom to carry a flag on your friggin’ bicycle. And the innocent little bugger gets creamed for it the week of Veterans Day.

Y’know, Texans like to call their state another country. But if there’s any state that can call itself another country, it’s California. And in case you’re wondering where you might find Denair High School, just turn left at Turlock.

Denair Schools Superintendent Edward Parraz said the school pulled the flag in an attempt to avoid racial tensions that stemmed from a “little issue” that broke out when Hispanic students carried Mexican flags to school on Cinco De Mayo.

“It was a safety concern that that particular campus supervisor called at that particular time based on information that she had heard,” Parraz said. (Click here to see Parraz’s interview with Fox40.com.) “The call was made for Cody’s safety.”

Cody, good citizen that he is, complied. He put it in his backpack, but only after folding it properly. But he did ask the school to reconsider what he said was a freedom of speech issue. After all, he does want to become a soldier himself someday. Would be quite the moral dilemma for the kid if these are the nimrods he pledged to serve and protect.

“I’m supposed to be free in this country and I should be able to fly the flag wherever I want to,” he told Fox40 (Click here to see Cody’s interview with Fox40.com).

I can only hope my kid grows up just like him.
