Bronx man who ducked GWB E-zpass had bogus registration, no license or insurance, Port Authority police charge

BEYOND BERGEN: A driver who blew through an E-ZPass lane on the George Washington Bridge without paying the toll was driving a sedan with a broken windshield and no license plate, Port Authority police said.

Roberto R. Payano, 26, of the Bronx gave PAPD Officer Leonel Gonzalez an expired New York State learner’s permit and registration that didn’t match the 2001 Audi after the officer stopped him on the lower level toll plaza yesterday afternoon, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

“He could not provide an insurance card,” Pentangelo said.

A computer check showed that Payano’s driver’s license was suspended and that the New Jersey registration and temporary tag for the vehicle — which he said he bought for $150 — were bogus, he said.

The car was impounded and Payano was arrested on charges of tampering with a public record and criminal simulation. He also received several motor vehicle violations.

Records show Payno has a previous arrest from two years ago, in which Yonkers police charged him and another man with a street holdup using a BB gun.
