Two officers with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were on patrol when a Lexus and a Honda collided near the bus station around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.
As they went to help, the officers said, two men got out of each car and one of them slashed another on the hand.Three immediately were arrested — including the unlicensed Honda driver, who had the box cutter and the $35,000 in counterfeit bills, said Jennifer Friedberg of the Port Authority.
The Lexus driver fled and is still being sought, she said.
It was in his car that Friedberg said police found the pot. His associate, whose name was unavailable, was taken to Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital for treatment of a gash on his hand, she said. He is being charged with drug possession.
Meanwhile, the Honda driver — 49-year-old Kevin Hernandez — is charged with assault, reckless endangerment, weapons possession and possession of the bogus money, Friedberg said. Also facing charges is his son, Joseph, 18, who was with him.
That today was “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” likely wasn’t lost on the officers. Nor, it’s certain, was the fact that the U.S. Treasury recently announced plans to replate its $100 bills because they’ve become too easy to counterfeit.
Friedberg said police also found several Oxycontin pills scattered around the crash scene but couldn’t determine who was carrying them.
