Born in Santiago, Chile, it was Penafiel's love of the thoroughbred horse that brought him to the United States in 1973. He managed Tilly Foster Farm, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Benedict. He was an avid handicapper, a talented soccer player and loved to watch his family play polo professionally in Santiago.
He is survived by his sister, Maria Angelica Lira Penafiel of Santiago, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Penafiel was predeceased by his wife of over 20 years, Mary Parke Lira; parents Roberto Lira Osa and Elena Penafiel Gunderlach; and sister Elena Lira Penafiel.
Horn & Thomes, in Pawling, is assisting with arrangements.
