Gordon, a Rhinebeck resident is a Leap Day baby, born on Feb. 29, 1952. She is celebrating her birthday this year in Florida with friends.
"It's special," Gordon said. "I've always enjoyed having it. When I was younger, I used to celebrate it on the Wednesday or Saturday before when my mother was off."
Gordon said there are positives to having a Feb. 29 birthday.
"On the years you have a leap day, people are really excited to celebrate with you," Gordon said. "On the years you don't, people feel bad and want to celebrate with you for the whole month."
Growing up, Gordon first realized she had a special birthday when the local newspaper took a photo of her staring at one candle on her birthday. When filling out applications or showing her ID, her date of birth often draws curiosity.
Gordon said all of her birthdays are special, even if they are celebrated on the 29th.
"I enjoy being surrounded by family and friends," Gordon said. "I'm very blessed that way."
While working at Rhinebeck Bank, Gordon met two colleagues who also had a Leap Day birthday.
"It was wild," Gordon said. "It's the first time in my life I had met that many people who shared the same birthday."
Gordon said she is looking forward to her Sweet 16, joking she is finally allowed to drive. While at the supermarket, she was asked if she was old enough to buy a bottle of wine.
For any young people disappointed to have their birthday once every four years, Gordon said there are some silver linings.
"You have the pleasure to pick when you want to celebrate your birthday," Gordon said. "And once every four years, it's very special."
