High Levels Of Air Pollution Found Near Interstates In Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle The first results of a multi-year study have found a concerning level of air pollution along busy interstate highways and manufacturing businesses in parts of Westchester, affecting nearby schools and childcare facilities.  The findings came from the statewide Community Air Monitoring Initiative conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which has been monitoring air quality in 10 disadvantaged communities across the state since the summer of 2022.  A meeting on the first results of the study, which has been taking a close look at air quality in the …

Swastika Drawn On Classroom Desk In Westchester County, School Responds School officials are responding after a swastika was drawn on a classroom desk in Northern Westchester.  The hate symbol was drawn on Thursday, Jan. 12 on the leg of a desk at John Jay High School in Cross River, according to a letter sent to parents by Principal Steven Siciliano.  In the letter, Siciliano condemned the drawing.  "I strongly condemn the drawing of and the appearance of this symbol of hatred in our school," Siciliano said, adding, "Given its location and size, it could give the impression that it was drawn more out of a cowardly need for attent…

But just hours later on Sunday, June 19, the sixth-grader died unexpectedly in his sleep at just 12 years old, according to his obituary. “When his mother went to wake him up the next morning, he had passed,” the school district said in a statement. HS Student Dies After Falling Into Hudson River Classmates are mourning the death of a high school student who died after falling into the Hudson River. Albany County resident Matthew Billetts, age 16, died Monday afternoon, June 13, according to a statement from the Watervliet City School District. He had been fishing with a friend and apparently suffered an unknown medical episode when he fell off the dock at Hudson Shores Park, News 10 ABC in Albany reports.
