New Rochelle Schools Add Holiday To Calendar Celebrating Muslim Culture
Students in New Rochelle will see a new holiday on the school calendar next year, as the Board of Education added the Islamic celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The Board announced that it would be adding the holiday - which marks the end of Ramadan - which will be observed on June 5 next year, and schools will be closed. In the wake of several violent incidents involving students at the New Rochelle High School, district officials have partnered with the creators of an anti-bullying application in an effort to curtail any further instances. The New Rochelle Police Department will have an increased uniformed presence at the high school moving forward, according to city and school officials following the third violent stabbing incident in a little over a week. Access to the New Rochelle High School is being “tightly controlled” following a stabbing incident in the building on Thursday morning. According to police, at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Thursday, the department received a call from security guards at the high school reporting that a stabbing had occurred at the school, and a 15-year-old suspect was seen on video fleeing the building.
