The Mets have been the talk of the town for months, as they easily won their division over the Washington Nationals, and rode their starting rotation of power arms to the National League pennant.
They now stand just four wins away from the team’s first World Series title since 1986, the year Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner made his famous error.
At Spectator’s Sports Pub in New Rochelle, they are expecting to see a sea of Mets jerseys, hats and colors.
“It’s been busy the entire playoffs, Mets fever has taken over New York lately,” bartender Rob Keyes, said in advance of Tuesday night’s game. “I think it’s only going to get more crazy if they keep winning.”
Emotions are running high in both New York and Missouri, with fans in both cities eagerly awaiting Tuesday’s World Series opener, when the Royals’ Edison Volquez squares off against “The Dark Knight,” Matt Harvey.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon have gone so far as to make a friendly bet, which will feature the loser of the series sporting the opposing teams’ jersey for a full day of work. Additionally, each governor’s office has prepared a gift basket featuring staples of their home state, including Kansas City beef ribs and New York bagels that will be shipped to the victor.
“They have it all: pitching, defense, and just enough offense. This could be the year we’ve all been waiting for,” Eastchester native Steve Cetta said in advance of Tuesday night’s game. “Lets go Mets.”
For an entire generation of Mets fans, this marks the first opportunity they’ve had to enjoy watching their team in the playoffs. The Metropolitans haven’t competed for the Commissioner’s Trophy since squaring off against the Yankees in a cross-town rivalry game 15 years ago.
“I’ve been a lifelong sports and Mets fan, this is the most excited I remember being for any game, even when the Giants made it to the Super Bowl,” Yonkers native Steve Dassler, 32, said. “There’s just something different with it being the Mets on top.”
