Junction Girls Win Third Softball Tournament

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Junction Girls 12-and-under travel softball team continued its excellent season by winning the Sunshine Fast Pitch Softball Tournament in New Jersey.

It was the third tournament championship for the team, along with the Jennie Finch and Scarsdale titles, this summer. The team also owns two second-place finishes.

The Junction Girls swept through the tournament, going 5-0. They shut out their first two opponents, 8-0 and 10-0, then won their next two games, 22-1 and 13-2. The team concluded its day with a 16-6 victory in the championship game.

The team is made up of Eastchester's Daniella Chiodi, Sophia Tiso, Cassie McGrath and Amanda Graham; Ardsley's Marie McNerney and Gia Saul; Isabella Riguzzi (Valhalla); Sam Turco (Dobbs Ferry); Mia Steinberg (Larchmont); Cassidy Montes (Yonkers); Tara Lombardi (Pound Ridge); and Ashley Puig and Kim Zapata of the Bronx.

“We had great pitching from our four pitchers, Cassie McGrath, Cassidy Montes, Sam Turco and Mia Steinberg; solid defense; and a relentless offense, with a mixture of small ball and power, and we had aggressive base running,” said coach Chris Tiso.

Tiso explained that after each game, the opposition gave out a medal to the player who stood out among the rest. Daniella “Speedy” Chiodi received three medals from the opposition.

“Speedy played the best ball I have ever seen her play,” Tiso said. “She played second base and shortstop, and hit all day long, including an inside-the-park home run to lead off one of our games.”

The Junction Girls return to action Saturday in a two-day tournament in East Fishkill.
