EASTCHESTER, N.Y. Eastchester lacrosse star Tom Cirillo has had quite a year. The senior attacker broke the Eagles scoring record, solidified his college plans and continues to lead his team on the field each week.
The seniors most recent accomplishment came Saturday when he passed the 150-goal mark in a 6-5 victory at Scarsdale. Cirillo accounted for 75 percent of the teams total with four goals in the win and now has 151 for his career.
Cirillo said he was aware of the impending milestone as he played through the game. When he scored, he made sure to grab a tangible piece of the accomplishment.
I knew I was coming pretty close, Cirillo said. I knew. I got the ball and gave it to our assistant coach, Elan (Kheyman).
Six days prior, Cirillo broke Eastchesters all-time scoring record with nine goals in a 12-10 loss to Pelham. Dave Massi previously held the record with 140 goals, but Cirillo finished that game with 143 for his career.
Whats more, he scored the historic goal against Pelhams goalie, Connor Wolfe, who just so happens to be a friend.
It was cool scoring against him, you know? Cirillo said.
Cirillo has accomplished two historic feats in less than a week, but still placed one other task above all.
Theyre both pretty cool. I think 150 is probably more of a milestone. Theyre both equal in my book, Cirillo said. Scoring is cool but winning games is more important.
Cirillo has been instrumental in helping Eastchester win games this season with his prolific scoring. When he broke the school record against Pelham, he accounted for nine of the teams 10 goals against the Eagles rival.
Coming into it, I knew it would be a good game. (The goals) fell quick in the beginning, Cirillo said. It kind of just set the tone for the game.
Cirillo was also named captain of the Eagles football team in the fall. The seniors said he loves both sports but is definitely a lacrosse first guy.
Next fall, Cirillo will play lacrosse for Salisbury University in Maryland, a school that has won nine national NCAA Division III National Titles since 1994, including one in 2011. Seagulls coach Jim Berkman contacted Cirillo and told him to take a week to think about the offer and let him know.
Cirillo went home, spoke with his parents and made the decision a bit more quickly than that.
When Coach Berkman called me and told me he had a spot for me, he told me to take some time to think about it I called him back the next morning, Cirillo said.
