EASTCHESTER, N.Y. The Eastchester High School varsity football team officially opened camp Friday morning, after completing an exhaustive summer workout program.
The players were finally able to get on the field after spending their summer building a camaraderie and their muscles during three-a-day workouts in the weight room.
Coming off consecutive 5-4 seasons, head coach Fred DiCarlo was anxious to get his team back on the gridiron to see the payoff of their hard work during the past few weeks.
You always look forward to being back on the field at the first official practice, he said. Everyone is fresh and eager to get going. We get to see the benefits of the summer workouts.
Despite returning all-league quarterback Greg DiCarlo and junior linebacker Will Tracy, coach DiCarlo said the Eagles roster hasnt taken form yet with plenty of positions up for grabs.
We have a lot of guys competing for starting spots. It makes for edgier practices each day. With as many new players as we have, were evaluating everyone everyday, he said. Were more inexperienced than we are youthful.
With the season officially under way, the team will have two-a-day practices until the school year begins. DiCarlo said that on most days, the players will be at the school working out and preparing for the regular season from 7:45 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Early in the season, you have to get them out of vacation mode, he said. Theres excitement in the beginning, but depending on the weather it can sometimes be difficult to get them focused.
