An example is Julia Moschetta, an 11th-grade student who completed a five-week workshop this summer entitled "Leading for Impact" at the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute, an Irvington foundation supporting programs for women and girls.
Through their project work, focused on stopping domestic violence, they raised awareness and money by holding bake sales.
The two were able to donate $428 to Hopes Door, a local shelter for victims of domestic violence, which they visited during the program.
During a culmination ceremony, the participants presented their projects before an audience. Eileen Fisher, the company's CEO, was in attendance.
"Leading for Impact" is for second-year participants ages 16-18.
On the elementary level, through a partnership with IBM, four students from the Cottle School have been awarded full scholarships to attend Family Science Saturday at IBM headquarters for six Saturdays beginning in January 2014.
The students will perform hands-on experiments on topics such as kitchen chemistry, algorithms and an introduction to electronics.
“Identifying, encouraging and, whenever possible, enabling these types of opportunities is a part of the district’s effort to fulfill the mission: A Promise to Prepare for Tomorrow,” said Superintendent Barbara Nuzzi in a release.
