Each year, hundreds of students from more than 20 school districts in the tri-state area participate in “Music in the Parks” festival, where band and chorus students serenade lively crowds of parents, onlookers and judges.
This year, the sixth grade concert band was awarded third place honors, which the seventh and eighth grade squads took second place in their category. The middle school show choir earned an “excellent” rating and took the top prize.
For the first time in a dozen years attending the “Music in the Parks” festival, the 118 students from the Tuckahoe Middle School earned the “Spirit du Core Award,” which, according to teachers Edie Anne Reidy Fernandez and Sandy Garufi, “is given to the school who demonstrates the highest form of respect toward their peers, the festival and their art.”
“There is one award we have strived for every year, the ‘Spirit du Core Award,” they made in a joint statement. “This is an award that crosses over all grade levels and music categories. This is the highest award of the day and only one is awarded. This marks seven month of hard work, dedication and preparation.”
