Three Eastchester High School Seniors Earn Honors

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. — Eastchester High School seniors Jennifer Cimons, Grant Cohen and Humayra Mayat have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The college-bound seniors placed in the Top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students that entered the competition by taking the 2011 PSAT. Around the country, nearly 34,000 students are being recognized by the Merit Scholarship Corp. for their academic aptitude.

“I’m so pleased the three fine Eastchester High School seniors were honored as Commended Students,” Eastchester High School Principal Jeffrey Capuano said. “Not only are Jennifer, Grant and Humayra excellent students, but they are kind and decent individuals who add much to our school community.”

Cimons plans to major in biochemistry in college. She has been a member of the Human Rights Club since her sophomore year, serving as treasurer as a junior. She has also been a tutor for her classmates in all science subjects.

Cohen hopes to study economics or international relationships in college. He’s an active member of the Spanish Club dating to his sophomore year and served as treasurer for the Going Green Club last year. Cohen is the co-president of the Academic Challenge Team and is responsible for organizing teams and mentoring new members. He is also a member of the varsity spring and winter track teams.

Mayat is a recent addition to Eastchester, having relocated from Long Island in the spring of her junior year. In New Hyde Park, she was vice president of the Foreign Language Honor Society, an editor of the school newspaper and vice president of Mathletes. She co-founded and served as the vice president of the Muslim Students Association. She is interested in pursuing her education in medicine.
