EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Janel Jorgensen, a  silver medalist with the U.S. swim team in the 1988 Olympics and president of Swim Across America, Inc. visited Eastchester High School on Wednesday.

She spoke to the varsity girls’ swimming team and provided a swim clinic for the team. In addition to answering many swim- and Olympic-related questions, Jorgensen spoke to the girls about goal-setting, overcoming obstacles and thinking, acting and preparing like a champion.

Jorgensen became a national sensation when she still was in high school, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team in 1988 at the age of 17. She won a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter medley relay and finished fifth in the 100-meter butterfly. She held four American records, was a 27-time All American, won 15 NCAA championship titles and was inducted in the Stanford University Hall of Fame.

Swim Across America, Inc. encourages volunteers to raise money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming-related events and activities.
