YONKERS, N.Y. - A Yonkers man faces up to 25 years in prison after being convicted of committing an egregious daytime murder nearly three years ago.

On Thursday, acting Westchester County District Attorney James McCarty announced that Pedro Delacruz, 26, was found guilty of felony counts of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for his role in shooting a man in broad daylight.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on July 21, 2013, Yonkers police officers responded to 80 Riverdale Ave. after receiving multiple calls of gunshots being fired in the area. Upon arrival, first responders found Delacruz’s victim lying unconscious behind the building, bleeding.

The victim was immediately transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was swiftly pronounced dead. An autopsy would reveal he died from internal injuries and "massive" bleeding.

According to McCarty, following an extensive joint investigation between the Yonkers Police Department and Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, it was determined that Delacruz approached his victim in a walkway between 80 and 1000 Riverdale Ave. and shot him twice in the chest and lower back. It is believed the two were involved in a “long running dispute.”

Delacruz was indicted by a grand jury last August and was arrested by Westchester County Police on a warrant less than a week later. He remains remanded to Westchester County Jail. Delacruz is due back in court for sentencing on Wednesday, May 25. He faces a sentence between 15 and 25 years in prison.
