As of Thursday, Eastchester police officials had not yet confirmed what the substance was, though there are reports that it was being posed as heroin.
The drug has a logo of “LOCO” stamped on the wax baggies it’s sold in and is likely being portrayed as heroin or “another dangerous drug sold in powder form," Eastchester Police said.
“Hundreds of thousands of counterfeit prescription pills, some containing deadly amounts of fentanyls have been introduced into U.S. drug markets, exacerbating the fentanyl and opioid crisis,” the DEA noted in an intelligence brief sent to the Eastchester Police Department on Wednesday.
“The sudden arrival of wholesale amounts of counterfeit prescription drugs containing fentanyls will result in an increase in overdoses, deaths, and opiate-dependent individuals. Motivated by enormous profit potential, traffickers exploit high consumer demand for prescription medications by producing inexpensive, fraudulent prescription pills containing fentanyls.”
Police are asking residents to spread the word about the lethal drug, and request that anyone with information about it contact the Eastchester Police Detective Division at (914) 961-3464 or the department’s Anonymous Tip Line at (914) 961-3138.
“The Eastchester Police Department realizes that opioid addiction a global, national and local problem,” officers wrote on the post. “In an effort to decrease the likelihood of you, or your family member to keep prescription medications secure, do a regular inventory of medications, educate yourself and dispose of unused prescription medications.”
