Francesco Goncalves, 20, was hiking the popular trail with a group of friends on Tuesday afternoon when he slipped and fell approximately 70 feet into Punchbowl Falls, according to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly before 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, personnel from the sheriff’s office, American Medical Response and the Hood River Crag Rats responded to the trail, where witnesses at the scene said Goncalves suffered a head wound and had been submerged in the water by the time they reached him.
Police confirmed that before they arrived at the scene, Goncalves had already passed away. Rescue crews were able to reach the accident site two hours later, which was nearly two miles from the trailhead.
The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into Tuesday’s fatal fall, though no foul play is suspected.
