White Plains Man Charged in Scarsdale Robberies

SCARSDALE, N.Y.—A White Plains man is being held at Westchester County Jail on $100,000 cash bail after being accused of a pair of strong-arm robberies, burglary and several other crimes Sunday afternoon in Scarsdale, police said.

The man, Edwardo Mendoza Zepeda, 48, of 86 East Post Road in White Plains, also is accused of choking a woman and menacing others with a screwdriver, according to police.

According to a Scarsdale Police Department report, the mini crime spree began at about 2:30 p.m. on Greenacres Avenue near Walworth Avenue when a man carrying a gas container stopped a 25-year-old jogger and asked her where he could find a gas station. She gave him directions, then turned away before the man tried to push her into her car, according to the report. The woman told police the man then used a screwdriver to threaten her and forced her into her car. She told police she pushed him away and he ran off.

About 20 minutes after police received the woman's report, police were called to a Brite Avenue residence where the resident said a man asked him if he could use the phone to call a taxi. According to the police report, the man forced his way into the house while threatening to kill the resident, who called to his wife to call police, causing the man to flee, taking the resident's cell phone.

Police soon received another report from a caller in the 1100 block of Post Road where a man, according to the report, forced his way into the house, choked a woman and stole more than $300 in cash.

Police saw the suspect running in a nearby yard and searched the area, locating him in the driveway of a Mamaroneck Road home. Police said they chased the suspect and subdued him during a struggle.

A canine unit from New Rochelle and police from Eastchester and Westchester County assisted in the pursuit, the report stated.

Zepeda is charged with multiple counts each of first degree burglary, first degree robbery and second degree menacing, plus attempted assault, seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal obstruction of breathing and resisting arrest.
