TUCKAHOE, N.Y. The Tuckahoe Village Board of Trustees wants to take the guesswork out of getting a sign or awning approved.
The board continued its monthlong public hearing Monday on proposed revisions to the village sign and awning code, with much of the nearly hourlong discussion centering on taking much of Sign and Awning Board members' personal opinions out of the approval process.
Village Attorney John Cavallaro compared the proposed new language in the code to building permits. "We did take the option out" to reject signs and awnings based on opinion. "We tried to make it black and white," he said, "What's acceptable, what's not. If it's within the law, it's permissible."
In addition, Mayor Steve Ecklond proposed adding a requirement for any sign company doing business in the village to get a sign-installer license. "If they have to get a license, they are probably going to be insured, and we can give them extra oversight by the Building Department. If a company illegally installs a sign, we may revoke their license for a period of time." Ecklond said other communities in the area, including Yonkers, already require sign companies to be licensed.
The board continued the public hearing to its June 11 meeting. Ecklond said he hopes to adopt the changes at that meeting.
