The schedule changes will begin on Sunday, April 7, with new timetables that will lead to faster service for most customers. The extra trains, in addition to the 56 added in October, will make for an increase of 5.6 percent in the number of trains Metro-North runs each week.
There will be an additional 85 weekday and 22 weekend trains on the Hudson Line. On the Harlem Line, there will be 65 weekday and six weekend trains added and nine more weekend trains on the New Haven Line.
The Hudson Line will see several improvements made for patrons.
Because of an increase in riders, there will be half-hourly service at the Spuyten Duyvil, Riverdale and Irvington stations during off-peak times and on most weekends. There will be three trains per hour in Ossining and Tarrytown and periods of particularly high ridership along the line will see an increase in train traffic.
On the Harlem Line, there will be half-hourly service at the larger, more popular stations on weekdays between Southeast and Grand Central Terminal. There will be three trains per hour at Scarsdale and Hartsdale, and four per hour at White Plains and North White Plains.
Additionally, there will be additional half-hourly service between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal Sundays on the New Haven Line.
A rock slope remediation project will run from April 8 through June 2 on the Harlem Line between Paling and Harlem Valley-Wingdale. To aid travelers, those trains will be replaced by busses from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sundays.
In a statement, Metro-North President Howard Permut said that the changes ought to make the railroad a more desirable form of transportation for patrons in New York and Connecticut.
“By adding off-peak and weekend trains, and by adding stops at key stations, we are able to increase frequency and provide faster trip times system wide,” he said. “Coupled with Metro-North’s reputation for reliability, we expect that this extraordinary service expansion will make the railroad more attractive than ever and that it will become the travel mode of choice.”
