Throughout the month of October, members of the Department of Public Works and sanitation crews will sport pink shirts, adorned with the village logo, to raise awareness of a disease that has touched countless families.
DPW General Foreman Frank DiMarco said that the move to wear pink shirts was spawned by a simple statement by one of his employees last year that turned into reality just a year later.
“One of my employees brought it up last year, and said that he thought it would be good if we wear pink for the month of October,” he said. “And here we are today, you can see the guys out there. Everyone is wearing them this month.”
Although they’ve been sporting their pink shirts for little more than a week, DiMarco said that the community has been appreciative of the DPW’s efforts to raise awareness for the disease.
“I can’t tell you the response we’ve gotten from the public in relation to the sanitation workers and everybody down at the DPW wearing their pink shirts,” he said. “We’ve all been touched by a family member or friend who suffered from breast cancer somewhere along our lives. It’s great that we’re able to help make everyone aware of it.”
